Bhandara is a district in the state of Maharashtra. The district headquarters are located at Bhandara. It is also sometimes referred to as the District of Lakes. Agriculture, industries and forest resources contribute majorly to the economy. Rice is produced in large quantities. A famous rice market takes place at Tumsar, a Tehsil town. The town of Bhandara is also called the Brass city as a large number of brass products industries are present here. There are abundant tourist spots present within the city. Fort, Brahmi, Chinchgad, Dighodi etc. are some of the important destinations. The district is also famous for the Ordnance Factory Bhandara Estate which is popularly known as Jawaharnagar colony. Kendriya Vidyalaya Bhandra and Ordnance Factory State School are the two school within the premises of the beautiful colony. This is the only Kendriya Vidyalaya in the Bhandara district. In Navegoan Bandh, there is a school called Navodaya Vidyalaya. Ashok Leyland, a Hinduja Group Company, has a production facility at Gadegaon near Bhandara.
Praful Patel from Gondia is the most famous politician of this district. Previously, he was the Aviation minister in the UPA government but now is the cabinet minister for heavy industries. During winters, Korambi is a popular tourist attraction. It is 8 kilometers from Bhandara. Near Korambi, there is a Devi temple present along which flows the River Vainganga.
Bhandara History
The district came into being in 1821. The Bhandara district was bifurcated and a new district was made named Gondia on May 1, 1999.
