Banka district, with Banka town as its administrative headquarters, is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar in India. It is located in far south - east of the State of Bihar. It shares borders with district Godda of the state Jharkhand in south and in west and north east with Jamui and Munger district respectively. The old district Bhagalpur is located in the north side of Banka. It was given the status of an independent district on 21st, February, 1991. Previously, it was a Sub-Division of Bhagalpur district.
The district comprises of 11 blocks and two towns Banka and Amarpur. A number of panchayats are there under every block. The district is recognized by the district Mandar Hill, also called Mandar Parwat, which is situated at Bounsi Block at about 18 Km from the District Headquarter. The famous fair called Bounsi mela is held every year in the month of January in the district. The fair starts from Maakar Sankranti o 14th January and continues for a month. The Mandar Hill relates itself with a story of Skand Puran of the epic period.
Banka History
Digvijay Singh served as a Member of the Parliament of India five times three times representing Banka in the Lok Sabha and two times in the Rajya Sabha. He was the former Union Minister of State in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government and Chandrashekhar Government. He was also a successful sports administrator and was a former President of the National Rifle Association of India since 1999. He was one of the three members of the Samta Party who founded it. Now Putul Singh represents this parliamentary constituency.
Banka Climate
The weather is hot in summers and pleasant in winters. Summer season comprises of March to June whereas cold season lasts from November to February. Monsoon starts in June and continues till September. Some amount of rainfall is also experienced in winter season. The south west monsoon generally starts in the second half of June. Maximum rainfall is experienced in July and August. The average annual rain fall received is 1200 mm uniformly throughout the district. The temperature rises up to 450C as Kark Rekha passes through North Part of the District. Average temperature is 150 C in winters.
