It is the fifth largest of India. It is also the seventh largest metropolitan in terms of area in India. Ahmedabad was rated as the fastest growing city in India and third in the world, after Chendgu and Chongqing which are in China. IMRB, a leading market research firm declared Ahmedabad as the best city to live in of Indias mega-cities in December 2011. It is situated at a distance of 32 kms from the state capital Gandhinagar, on the banks of River Sabarmati. Ahmedabad was the capital of Gujarat till 1960. It is the administrative centre of Ahmedabad district. The city is commonly known as Amdavad in colloquial Gujarati.
Since the time the State of Gujarat was created in 1960, Ahmedabad had become an active metropolis with beautiful classical and colonial European styled buildings, lining the citys thoroughfares. The city is a spectator to a major construction boom and population increase these days. It is a rising centre of education, information technology and scientific industries. Ahmedabad remains the cultural and commercial heart of Gujarat and much of Western India.
Ahmedabad History
Sultan Ahmed Shah founded Ahmedabad on February 26th, 1411 to utilize it as a capital of Gujarat Sultanate. It is named after the founder. A military cantonment was established under the British Rule. The city infrastructure was modernized and expanded. Ahmedabad was incorporated into the Bombay Presidency during the British Rule but still it remained the most important city in the Gujarat region. The city became the home of budding textile industry. It earned the nickname Manchester of the East. In the first half of the 20th century, the city was at the forefront of the Indian independence movement. It was the hub of numerous campaigns of civil disobedience which promoted and supported workers rights, civil rights and political independence.
Ahmedabad Climate
The climate of Ahmedabad is hot and semi-arid, with marginally less rain than needed for a tropical savanna climate. Summer, monsoon and winter are the three main seasons. The climate is extremely dry, apart from the monsoon season. The weather in the months of March to June is hot. The average summer maximum is 41 degree Celsius and the average minimum is 27 degree Celsius. The average maximum temperature is 30 degree Celsius and the average minimum is 15 degree Celsius from November to February. The climate remains extremely dry. There is a mild chill in January because of cold northerly winds. A humid climate prevails from mid-June to mid-September because of the southwest monsoon. 800 millimeters is the average annual rainfall, but heavy infrequent torrential rains cause local rivers to flood. When the monsoon does not extend as far west as usual, it is not unusual for droughts to take place. The highest temperature ever recorded is 47 degree Celsius and 6 degree Celsius is the lowest. The temperature rose to 42.8 degree Celsius on May 2010, which was the highest temperature recorded in Ahmedabad in forty years. Ahmedabad has endured increasing air, water and soil pollution due to the neighboring industrial areas, the citys textile mills and lack of awareness regarding cleanliness among citizens in the recent years.
