South 24 Parganas is the smaller division of the erstwhile 24 Parganas and has its headquarters in Alipore. It is a combination of both urban and rural culture. It has a vast stretch from Kolkata down to the villages around Bay of Bengal. Since it is greatly diversified, the administration finds it hard to govern. While in the urban areas, issues like population control are rampant, the rural side faces problems like lack of transport and communication. The Panchayat bodies take care of the rural population which comprises of the major composition. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation along with 7 municipalities takes care of the urban side. Thirty nine percent of the population is schedule caste and 37.21% are B.P.L. families.

Pratapaditya set up a new base where the Kagarghat canal and Jamuna meet. There he prepared himself for a second fight. All his forces gathered at the fort he established choosing a very strategic point. The first attack by the imperialists was made on the Jessore fleet who took shelter underneath the fort. The imperialists were refrained further by the Jessore fleet. But then imperialists made a sudden attack on the Jessore fleet that lost which made Pratapaditya to abandon the fort. This defeat was the last one for Pratapaditya who surrendered to Ghiyas Khan at Kagarghat. He was then taken to Islam Khan at Dhaka. He remained there until he died at Benaras while changing prisons. The Jessore king was held captive and also was dethroned.
