Thoubal 

Rivers named Imphal and Thoubal are the significant rivers that passes through this district. The Ukhrul Hill is the origin of the river Thoubal, while the Senapati hills are the origin point for the Imphal River. The Thoubal district is separated on the north and western portion by this river. The summer months witness these rivers as parched and waterless, however during the monsoon months, the rivers wake up to be untamed and rough, thus causing regular floods. In order for the movement of the pricy items, these rivers have important functions. 

The Wangjing, the Arong and the Sekmai are the name of the district’s other main rivers. These rives have the Ukhrul Hills as their origin points. Through Khangabok, the river named Arong passes, through Heirok, the river named Wangjing flows while the place called Loushi Pat contains the river Wangjing.

Lakes: A portion of the Loktak Lake area is present in the south-western corner of the district. This part of the district is a low elevated land. It also contains numerous lakes, whose water is generally supplied by the rain water. Kharung, Ikop, Pumlen, Lousi and Ngangou are the names of the significant lakes present here. The Waithou Lake is situated in the northern part of the district. The formation of the lake took place by drainage waters. The Waithou Hill is situated on the western side of the lake, while the small hamlets and the fields of paddy crops are situated on the eastern side of the lake. Because of the area expansion for practical reasons, the sizes of the lakes are constantly becoming lesser and lesser. All the lakes fall into the river Imphal. 

Hills: Numerous low altitudinous hills and small hillock are scattered across the district. In some of the regions are devoid of the ranges such as the Khekman range, Mantak range, Kwarok range and Thongam Mondum-Punam range. The altitude of the Punam Hill is 3310 feet above the sea level. The hills are enveloped in quite good cultivation. The stripping down of trees from this area has turned the place into quite infertile and unappealing. During the past few years the plan of growing pineapples and other beneficial plantation on the hill slopes has been done.

  

Khongjom: The distance between Thoubal and Khongjom is 10 Kms. It is located in the south direction of Thoubal. The distance between this place and Imphal is 32 Kms. The battle between the armed forces of Manipur and British side took place at this very location. This battle was the last battle of the independence of Manipur. On top of a small hill like structure, one can see a monument. This place is well linked via the National Highway.

Sugnu: The distance between Imphal and Sugnu is 74 Kms. In the entire south region of the district, this location is considered to be a significant business centre. One can catch a spectacular glimpse of the Imphal River.

Waithou: For its panoramic scenes and beautiful landscapes, this place is quite popular. Overseeing the Waithou Lake and located on the slope of the hills, an inspection bungalow is present. One famous product of this place is the delicious pineapples. Another exquisite item of Waithou is an unique fish named ‘Ngaton’. This used to be found in this place some time back the distance between Waithou and the district headquarters in a mere 3 Kms. 

Kakching: The town of Kakching functions as the sub-divisional headquarters of the sub-division of Kakching. This place is a renowned business hub for different type of agricultural products such as vegetables, fishes and also rice.

Thoubal: The town of Thoubal, functions as the administrative headquarters of the district of Thoubal. Also, it serves as the sub-divisional headquarter for the Thoubal sub-division. The distance between Thoubal and Imphal is 22 Kms. It is located on the NH 39. The town of Thoubal is separated into two equal parts in length by the highway. The river named Thoubal passes through the heart of the town in the east to west direction. This is the district’s largest town. It is also one of the most significant business hubs of the district.  

Pallel: On the border between Thoubal and Chandel, Pallel is located. This place is the location, where the Thoubal’s plain land and the undulating terrain of Chandel come together at one point. Thoubal is known for its spectacular terrain and natural beauty. In the market place of Thoubal, one can find the normal agricultural items and also the hand products of the local people.

By air: The nearest air terminal is located in Imphal.

By rail: The nearest railway station is situated at a distance of 240 Kms in a place called Dimapur.

By road: This place has got some very good road linkages, so it is easily accessible by cars, jeeps, buses and taxis.
