Sonmarg

Sonmarg is situated 80 kilometers away from Srinagar. The region is full of quiet meadows and carpeted fields. Amazing glaciers can be seen in the background with miniature plateaus, snowfields, pines and islets. Some of the world’s highest mountain ranges are present in Sonmarg. The place derives its name from the fact that the sun rays reflect upon the snow clad peaks and lighten up the entire valley. Sonmarg means ‘meadow of gold’.

The beauty of the place is multiplied by the presence of glaciers, waterfalls and lakes. Sonmarg is located at a height of 2740 meters above sea level. It is present at the foot of the Zojila Pass. Sonmarg gives way to Ladakh. It is an ideal place for excursions.

People who love fishing can go for trout fishing in the Krishnasar Lake and Sind River. They can also experience the adventures of sledging in the snow clad mountains. Trekkers can also find opportunities on the routes to the lakes of Vishansar, Krishansar and Gangabal.

                                          Tourist places in Sonamarg

Nilagrad: The Mountain River and River Indus meet at Nilagrad. The water here is of striking red color which makes it a very unique place. The water of this place is believed to cure skin problems. For that, one must have a bath in the river every week till the problem is cured. Most people visit this place on Sundays. 

Krishnasar Lake: It is situated at an elevation of 3801 meters. Trout fishing in an important activity in this lake. It is an ideal excursion point.

Baltal: This is a grassland which is situated close to the Ladakh territory. It is also very near to the Amarnath cave. People stay here while they are on their way to Amarnath.

                                         How to reach Sonamarg 

By air: The nearest airport is at Srinagar which is around 81 km away from Sonmarg. It takes around 3 hrs to cover the distance by road.

By rail: The closest railhead is Jammu Tawi in Jammu. The distance of approximately 400 km between Sonmarg and Jammu is covered in almost 10 hrs.

By road: Buses from all districts of Jammu and Kashmir go to Sonmarg. Paid taxis are also available.
