Formed in 1979, Badgam is a district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India, which was formed by carving it out from the former Sri Nagar district. It is located at an average height of 5,281 ft above sea-level. It was known as Deedmarbag in ancient times. The district comprises of both mountainous and plain areas. The climate is of the temperate type with the upper-reaches receiving heavy snowfall in winter.

The average annual rainfall of the district is 585 mm. The southern and south-western parts are mostly hilly whereas the eastern and northern parts of the district are plain. The average height of the mountains is 1,610 m and 477 sq. km of area is covered by forests. The soil is loose and mostly denuded. The district comprises of one sub Division called Khansahib and six  Tehsils namely Budgam, Beerwah  Chadoora, Khansahib, Khag, and Charisharief. It has been divided into eight blocks namely Budgam, Beerwah, Chadoora, Khansahib, Khag, BK Pora, Narbal and Nagam which serve as the main units of economic development. There are 283 panchayats comprising 509 revenue villages in the district.

Budgam History

The famous Aga family of Kashmir belongs to Budgam. It is said that a famous Hakeem namely Syed Hyder came here to settle down about 150 years ago. He was devout and religious man. Many people came to him for spiritual assistance. After Hyder's death, his son, Aga Syed Mehdi, succeeded him. He studied religion in Najaf. The present Aga Sahab, the spiritual leader of the Shias, is a descendent of Aga Syed Mehdi.The family has produced a great religious man in Aga Syed Yusuf Al-Mousavi, who died in 1982. The main market in Budgam town is named after him. During the Dogra rule, Kanihama village was famous for Kani shawls, making it into an important trade centre. The idols of Raja Beerwa's period pointing to Shivite influence in the area, are found in Beerwah tehsil. Buddhism has also been dominant in various areas of Budgam which include Ishgan and Ishkota. The Khag block in the district is known for its ecstatic beauty.

The Budgam district has produced many distinguished poets and writers of Kashmir Language which includeShama Fakir and Samad Mir, the pioneers of spiritual Kashmiri poetry, Abdul Ahad Azad, revolutionary poet of kashmir who also penned the history of Kashmiri Literature and Ghulam Nabi Dilsoz, a well known romantic poet . Ghulam Nabi Gowhar, novelist, and Moti Lal Saqi, poet, scholar and critic are some of the living personalities from the district.
