Pulwama, also known as Panwagam antiquity and later as Pulgam, is a district in Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is at a distance of 40 KM away from its summer capital Srinagar. Pulwama History

Originally called Panwangam, it comprises of 4 tehsils namely Malikpora, Dangerapora, Chatpora and Dalipora. With due time, its name gradually got changed "Pulgam" and subsequently Pulwama. It possesses a rich and cultural and historical background. Awantipora was once the capital of Kashmir. The remnants of the city are still located at site 28 kms from Srinagar, in the form of Awanti Swami temple ruins on the left side of the Srinagar Jammu national highway. signify The rich history of the District are signified by the archaeological movements at Awantipora, Jawlerari Kakapora and other places.
Awantiverman was great supporter and benefactor of Art sculpture. In addition to the Awanti Swami temple, he built another temple at about a kilometer awayfrom the city at Jawlerari. Artificial lakes are said to have surrounded these temples. After the death of the King, his son, Shanker Varma ascended the throne and retained Awantipora as his capital. He won many areas and extended his kingdom beyond Kashmir with his large Army comprising of the local people.
Pulwama Culture
Pulwama has basically two regions- mountainous and plains. Some areas of Pulwama, Tral, and Pampore Blocks fall in the mountainous region with the rest coming under plain Zone. People generally live nomadic life style, following the pahadi culture in the mountainous region. The people from these areas are very hard working. Cattle grazing is their major occupation. Main language spiken is pahadi. The rest of region is having Kashmiri culture. There are 96% Muslims, 2.5 % Hinus and 1.5 % Sikhs in the district. The Tral Block of the District is dominated by the Sikh community. There havr bee mass migration of Hindus from the district.
In addition to Kashmiri, Urdu and English are the other languages spoken in the District. Id-ul-fitre, Holi, Baisakhi, Ramnavmi, Eid- ul-zuha are the major festivals celebrated. Republic day ad independence day are also celebrated with enthusiasm.
The district is famous for fruits and saffron. It is also known for most beautiful apple orchards in the valley. Handicraft Development, Shawal manufacture are the major occupation of people. Fascinating embroidered work called Namda, Gabba and other artistic items are also created by the local people.
