Maithon

The very first multi-purpose project of India, carried out by Damodar Valley Corporation, Maithon Dam is the largest dam constructed by DVC. The name of the dam has been derived from Mai-ka-than. One can enjoy their stay in a beautiful rest house, which is located in the middle of the vast lake. 

The distance of the dam from Dhanbad is 52 Kms. The word can also stand for ‘Mother’s Abode’. In order to check on the flow of water in the Barakar River and also to stop flood, this dam has been constructed. The power station is an underground station. It was the first of its type to be built in South East Asia. One can also visit the Kalyaneshwari Temple, which is located at a close distance of Maithon Dam.

The length of the dam s 15,712 feet and the altitude of the dam measures to 165 feet. 60,000 kilo watt of electricity is produced by this power plant. In order to visit the power plant, one needs to have authorization from beforehand. The authorizations are done by Assistant Public Relations Officer.

By Rail: The closest railway station is located in Barakar. The distance of Barakar and Maithon Dam is 8 Kms.

By Road: This place is accessible via frequent running buses to Maithon from different locations. 

By Air: The nearest air terminal is located in Ranchi.
