The state of West Bengal has seven districts in the Burdwan division out of which one is Bankura. It connects the Bengal plains to the Chhota Nagpur plateau. Alluvial plains are to be found on the low lying east and north east side. Gradual slopes arise towards the west and one can see rocky terrain. The district forms part of the Red Corridor. Bankura is associated with the Malla kingdom of West Bengal as it formed the center of their kingdom. It holds rich cultural significane from the late Middle Ages. The area had a lot of influence by Vaishnavism, a new religion which was pronounced during the Malla time, in seventeenth century AD. In 1765, the British East India Company took away the Malla kingdom. The new Bankura district was formed in 1881 and derives its name from its headquarters.

Bishnupur and the Parganas of Sonamukhi, Indas, Kotulpur, Shergarh and Senpahari got transferred to Burdwan in 1872. In 1879, the thanas of Khatra and Raipur and the outpost of Simplapal and the thanas of Soamukhi, Kotulpur and Indians also joined Burdwan giving it its present shape. It was known as West Burdwan until 1881 when it was renamed as Bankura.
