As per the anthropologists, this area of Chotanagpur has seen the alteration to Homo sapiens from Homo erectus. There are as many as 30 distinct tribal groups of people in this Chotanagpur region of Jharkhand. The tribal groups differ from the non-tribal group of people. The different tribes are even distinct from each other as well.
Among all the tribal groups of Jharkhand, the most dominant group is the Santhals. The Subcontinent’s very first iron smelters are considered to be the Asurs. They relocated themselves from the Gangetic plains to the Chotanagpur Plains. Some of the other tribal groups, who came here from the adjacent states, are the Dravidians tribes namely the Gonds, the Khonds and the Koras.
The Chotanagpur Plateau region also contains the most ancient geological deposition of India. The region also has huge deposits of many types of minerals. Plateaus, hills and valleys make up the terrain of this region. The range of altitude of this region varies from 1,000 feet to 3,000 feet.
