Durgapur is quite a famous place in West Bengal and the second planned city in India. It is in the Burdwan district and popular as industrial town. It is an industrial hub which is 160km away from Kolkata. It has numerous power plants, chemical and engineering industries etc. it has an engineering college, National institute of technology which in quite popular in India. Though a small town yet we can count it among the metropolis. Durga puja is the main festival of this place. It is the festival of pomp and glory. The tourist must visit during Durga puja in order to have an experience of the Bengalis most important festival.
Places of attraction
Garh jungle- the tourists are largely attracted to this place for its wildlife. It is counted among the adventurous place and this place is oldest place of Ancient India.
Durgapur barrage- is popularly known as mython dam. It is on River Damodar. The beauty of this place cast a magical spell on every tourist and the exquisiteness of this place attracts them. It takes 3omins to reach the place.
Durgapur steel plant- a worldwide popular plant and an integrated steel plant of Steel Authority of India limited. It is the heart of Durgapur and it only supply the world with its good quality of steel and iron but also adds a huge amount to Durgapur economy. One of the important thing for the tourist to see but for that one need to take permission from the administrative body. The soft cool breeze blows, which gives a soothing effect.
Shantiniketan- a very calm and peaceful place. It is just 60km away from Durgapur. A place planned and decorated by Rabindranath Tagore. It has a famous university called Visva Bharati. People even from abroad come here to study every year. It is not only famous in India but also in abroad. The tranquility of the place refreshes ones mind.
Troika park- fun place for the kids and refreshment for the oldies; charming place for the youths. It is a km away from the city centre. It is accompanied by a small deer park for adding fun to the peoples enjoyment. It also has a small lake for boating which energizes the people.
Bhabani Pathaks tilla- it is actually a network of tunnel starting from Durgapur up to Damodar River. One of the famous Bengali novelists, Bankim Chandra has described the beauty of the place in his novel. Though it is an unusual place and rarely visited by the tourist yet it amazing work attracts the tourist.
Climate
It basically has a transitional climate between the tropical wet and dry climate. It experiences three types of climate- summer March-may, Monsoon June- September, winter December-February. Best season to visit Durgapur is between October and February. It is ideal time for the tourist to visit the place as the weather is not very humid at that time and has a very pleasant climate. One must avoid visiting the place during summer.
How to reach there
By AIR-
Durgapur doesnt have its own airport. So in order to reach Durgapur one has to arrive at Kolkata airport and from there taxi or cab is always available. The taxi fare is around Rs 3,000 and it might take around 5hrs approx to get to.
By TRAIN-
Durgapur railways are well connected with all the major metropolitan state of India. Few trains such as Sealdah-rajdhani, Poorva express Kolkata mail etc.
By BUS-
Both private and government buses are available. It is 182 km away from Kolkata. Buses are available from all the parts of the state. And the fare is 3/km. it would take around 3hrs approx to reach Durgapur.
