OverView of Nahan

Nahan town is the Headquarter of present Sirmour Distt. of himachal Pradesh. It was capital of Princely State of Sirmour and founded by Raja Karam Parkash in 1621 AD.About Sirmour it is said State derived its name sirmour becuase it held senior poistions  amongst all Princely hill States and word sirmour means Head of all. It is believed that King of Jaislmer Ugar Sen during his visit to haidwar  happened to know that a throne of near by state is vacant and sent his son Soba Rawal who conquered this area  and crowned as King of sirmour by name of Suban parkash in 1097 with his capital at Rajban since then Parkash  remained with Sirmour Princely family continued  till today and uptill lapse of princely states same family ruled Sirmour. During gorkha invasion Rani of sirmour requested help from british who drive gorkhas away from state and Made minor son of rani Goler king with ordering her as regent last rule of state witness struggle of independnce from State and Britsh and culminated into merger in india. Malhi Parkash ruled the state from 1108AD to 1117 AD. He was a man of deep religious disposition. He fought battle with raja of Srinagar of Garhwal and wrested from his fort of Malda. His descendent raja Udit Parkash ruled from 1121 to 1127AD who changed his capital from Rajban to Kalsi in Dehradun.. Down the descent in the line come the raja Somar Parkash who ruled the state ffrom 1149 to1158AD, who conqured the fort of Ratesh in Keonthal state and made it his capital. But Suraj parkash who ruled from 1158 to 1169 AD returned his capital to Kalsi whereupon his subjects revolted against him and his daughter was killed in the process of saving fort. On hearing this  news, suraj parkash returned from Kalsi and subdued rebels and also overcome the Thakuras of Jubbal, Balson, Kumarsain, Ghond, Sahari, Theog, Kotgarh and Rawain and forced them to pay tribute. Next century in the history of State passed uneventfully.Howver the period of Jagat parkash from 1342 to 1356 AD was known for mal administration with the result above Thakura revolted against the suzerainty. His son Bir parkash was able ruler and  during his rule from 1356 to 1366 he crushed revolt of the misery junction of Rawin and Jubbal States.
                      During the time of subsequent rulers capital of  the state shuttled between Neri Kot and Gargh in Ratesh Paragana. But during the time of Budh Parkash it was again shifted to Kalsi. The present capital at Nahan was founded by Karam Parkash in 1621.who ruled state from 1616 to 1630 and he became desciple of Baba Bhawani Das He was succeded by raja Subhag parkash who took intrested in development of state particularly in field of agriculture. His son Jog Raj succeded him under the title of Mat Parkash who ruled between 1684 to 1704. One of intresteding fieature of his reign was visit of Guru Govind Singh to Paonta who resided there for 3 years when he was expelled from Anandpur by raja of Bilaspur. He died issuless therefore Hari Parkash ascended the throne in 1704
