The most south-eastern district of Himachal Pradesh is the district of Sirmour. The terrain of the district is mainly hilly. Almost 90 percent of the inhabitants reside in the villages. The town of Nahan is located in the district. Fossils having age of over 85 million years have been discovered at Suketi, the Shivalik Fossil Park, which is situated in the district. Nahan, Renuka, Shilai, Rajgarh, Pachhad and Paonta Sahib are the six tehsils of the district.
The economy of Sirmour is completely dependent on agriculture. Potato and ginger are the crops produced by Sirmours farmers, although these days tomato is becoming their first preference. The region of Rajgarh yields some fine quality of peach, for which Sirmour is quite well known. This place is also named as the Peach Bowl. Other than that, heaps of fruits are produced in this region. A fruit research centre, run by the Government, is there in Dhaula Kuan, close to Paonta Sahib. Another important fact about this place is that, Apple and Mangoes, both of them can be yielded on the land of Sirmour. The soil of the village of Lana-cheta is very productive. The first preference of the farmers of this village is to cultivate grains. The district is sectioned by the river Giri, into Giripar and Giriwar. The two segments are almost equal in proportion. Hinduism is the most preferred and the most common religion practiced by the people of Sirmour and similar to many people of Himachal Pradeshs other districts, idols are worshipped. The languages commonly spoken by the people are Hindi and Pahari. A folk dance named Nati, is quite famous and well-liked amongst the crowd.
Sirmour History
Many alterations and improvements were brought around in Sirmour by him, one example of which is the comletion of the Surendra Water Works. Numerous primary Schools, where one can study free of cost as well as hostels for students and buildings of high school were constructed by him. Other than this, Mahima Library was initiated and launched by him. Also he got the road medaled from Nahan to Kala Amb, whose construction was finished in 1927. During his administration, the milestone achieved in the field of revenue administration was the revision of settlement in 1931. As a result of this review, all the state revenue records got updated and thus made consistent and dependable. During his stay in Europe for the treatment of his Maharani, he passed away in August 1933, far away from his own empire.
In 1933, Maharaja Rajendra Singh, his son ascended the throne. He received a thorough training in the running of the states administration and affairs during the time of his father only. He was an ardent lover of sports as well. From 15th April, 1936, Maharaja Rajendra Singh had a marriage agreement with the state of Nagod, which is located in Central India. The proliferation of the Usurious Loans Act was a significant highlight of his reign. The activities of the freedom fighters of this region became greater than before, during the rule of the last ruler, which is quite an interesting fact about this place. In these activities, a major role was performed by Praja Mandal. He helped to move the opinion of the public against the state and the Government of British India. As a result of this action, the state acceded into the Union of India and eventually combined in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
