OverView of Rohini
The Picturesque village, Rohini has been there some five hundred years ago. According to local accent
Rohini used to be pronunced as Rohoni. Before the Britishers came and even thereafter Rohini used to be
connected by the River Subarnarekha, which now only nevigable during Monsoon. Connectivity through
roads established only later part of 1960. In order to reach Calcutta one had to ride a bullock cart all
night and reach the nearest Railway station Sardiha. From Sardiha by passanger train to Howrah and
Calcutta. This used to take around 20 Hours.Today one can cover the 170 KM in 2.5 hrs. following
NH 6.
The locality had major population of Adhibasis (santhals, Bhumij, Bhuniyas etc.). About 30% inhabitants were Brahmins, Vaishnavs and the Kshitryas. Most of the non-adivasis of the area has / had links with
oriya culture,
The mixed population of Adibasis,Brahmins,Vaishnavs, Kshitryas had unique unity and fellow feeling.
The High school established in 1948 had students from all community and therefore many qualified
Adibashis have come from the area.
Opportunity:
The area being close to NH-6, can be easily developed to a tourism center to cover
the Subarnarekha, The great temple of Rameswar and the bliss of solitude. The West Bengal
Govt. has to take a little initiative to develope this place.
The locals are mostly following traditional method of Agriculture although the fartile lands of
the area can be used in the cultivation of cash crops and Horticulture. Grape cultivation can be
explored as a large part of the land has similarity with Nashik(Maharashtra) like soil.
Threat :
Major threat to this area is communication. Although some roads have been built but all of
them is poorly maintained.
