West Bengal has another district called Paschim Medinipur and West Medinipure. It was formed on January 1, 1992 when the district of Medinipure was divided into east and west or Purab and Paschim Medinipur. Four sub-divisions constitute the district of West Medinipure, namely Kharagpur, Medinipur Sadar, Ghatal and Jhargam. It forms the part of the Red Corridor. Some north and north eastern regions come under the Chhota Nagpur plateau. The area has hard literate soil. Alluvial soil is found in the eastern regions of Medinipur. The Rivers namely Hoogly, Cossye, Rupnarayan and Subarnarekha flows through this region. The rivers follow the course towards the south-east. The place is full of recent stones and recent alluvial soil. Besides laterite, other rocks to be found are Conglomerate, epidiorite and niche. These are not at all suited for cultivation. The state highway and the railway track run in parallel to each other. On the eastern side of the region, the land is cultivable due to the presence of alluvial soil, whereas on the western side, which lies towards the Chhota Nagpur plateau in not cultivable.

Medinipur West History

Many of the Communist activities led to the formation of the Students Federation in the year 1938. Branches of the Federation spread out to Medinipur town, Kharagpur, Mahisadal, Nandigram, Lakhya, Mohammadpur and Kalagechia of Tamluk Sub-division, Anandapur in Keshpur PS and in Kalora of Daspur PS. Kishan Sabha, Bhupal Panda, Saroj Roy, Mohini Mondal and Deben Das were the main contributors. Tebhaga Movement took militant faces. The dispute took place between the Krishak Sabha against the zotdar and the police. The areas involved in the riot were Nandigram, Mahisadal, Sutahata and Panskura. The 10th Session of Pradeshik Krishak Sabha was held in Panchkhuri on February 27, 1945. Krishnabinod Roy presided over this session. Out of the 3119 members of Tebhaga, 200 were from Midnapore alone.
