OverView of Reckong Peo

Recong Peo town is district headquarter of Kinnaur district that came into being from erstwhile Chini Tehsil of formar Mahasu District  on 1st May 1960. Prior to merger of State on the eve of Independence Kinnaur valley was part of Bashahar State. Kinner in puran means between men and god possessing mystrous supernatural powers. After the death of Harsha country was divided into old principalities and area between Sutluj and its tributorires and Baspa was under control of Thakkars from very early times they were known as per they place occupy as chini thakur and kamru thakur. Kamru thakur brough all chiefs under his control and laid foundation of Bashahar State to which the region belonged till the disolution of state recently. Durtion meadieval it remain almost undistrubed and some more thakuries were added about sambat 1611. Raja Chattar Singh brought all areas under his control. Gorkhas attacked Bushahar but they have to go to fight with Ranjit singh and sansar chand and defeated and then State was restroed to Raja Mahender Singh  after gorkhas forced to withdraw by Britsh on 6th November 1815. In the absence of authentic historical records history of Kinnaur region is obscure. Yet its history can be traced back to 6th centur BC when Magdha was a power and it may be seen that Chader gupta Morya must have extended his boundres up to himalaya and Ashoka established a great empire. after Mauray kushana came into power and Kanishka was the most powerful king after him Harshvardhan estblished a great empire with his capital an thaneshwar in haryana and he must have ruled Kinnuar regiuon also. After him in 647 coutry was agains divided in to old principalities and this region was under control of Thakkaaras. By the begining of 14th century the entire aarea of Kinnaur was divided into 7 parts. There was further splitting up of and area came to be covered with many small hegamonies, which were constantly warring against or allying with each other, as conditioned requred. Neighbouring Bhots also jump into the fray and did not desist from creating trouble. In the medieval period many hill states like Kangra Sirmour and Bilaspur were attacked by the Mughal and made tributory to Mughal, Bushahar could not be reached by any. the consolidation an d addition of territories continued during this time also.The Thukoorais ofDulaitoo, Kurungoloo, and Kuatiro wre annexed during this time about samwat 1611. Raja Chatar Singh brought all areas of erstwhile Bushaahr State under his control. He was considred most virtouour during his reign. Nothing is much know about his successsor Kalyan Singh But his successor Rja Kehri Singh was the highest skilled warrior of the time but his successors were not so able and it is said one raj Ram Singh made rampur his capital in place of Sarahan and Karmu. During his reign series of contests began with raja of Kullu and Bushahar had lost the territory of Seraj. It seems territories wich were annexed by Raja Kehri Singh became free during the weak rule of Raja Rudar Singh but his successor raja Ugar Singh took them over by force of arms. Immediately after the death of Kehri Singh Gurkhas made massive attack on Bushahar. Minor ruler and his mother could not withstand attack and fled to Namur leaving behind treasure at Sarahan which was looted by gorkhas and all records of the state were destroyed. Gurkahas had extended their dominon greatly and Gorkha leader Amar Singh thapa had reached upt to Kangra. He was drawn from the valley of Kinnaur by the superior forces of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Sansar Chand Katoch of kangra. and area between yamuna and Sutluj came under British Protection by the treaty of 1809 between British and Maharaja Ranjit Singh. British took positive steps to expel Gurkahs and after long and desperate struggle completed defeated Amar Singh Thapa on 15th April 1815. On the conclusiion of Gurkhar was Rjaa Mahinder Singh was granted a sanad on 6th November 1815. It gave Khaneti and Delth Thakuries to Bushahar and Rawin , which was a distt. of state was transfered to Keonthal Kumarsain was constituted seperate Thakurai. From the  forgoing account it would appear that Kinnaur acted as bulwark to the Bushahar State. However with lapse of paramountancy Kinnaur then known as Chini tehsil was merged to form a part of the then Mahasu district. In fact chini teshil cover entire kinnaur valley beyoung wangtu whcih was created in 1891 bv the then ruler Tika Raghunath Singh. Thus since 1891 chini tehsil with the vast area beyound Wangtu continued to be in exestence uptil 1960. Since 1947 it was tehsil of the then Mahasu district.  By 1960 the importance of reorganising boarder areas was considered and in view of ethnic and cultural consideration the areas which wre partly in Rampur tehsil were reorganised into a seperate distirct forming the present Kinnaur district.
