History of Lepakshi
Shrine of Kurmashila
There are some shrines which depict God in his/her raging form. Lepakshi in Anantpur
district is one such holy place. Lepakshi is in Andhra Pradesh, but located in the borders of
Karnataka. Hence it sort of belongs to both Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Kurmashila is
located in a small hillock, which resembles the shape of a Tortoise or Kurma.
Sri Veerabhadra swamy dw ells in this holy shrine. Though this particular shrine is dedicated
exclusively to Lord Shiva, there are how ever two more shrines which renders tribute to both
Lord Shiva and Lord Venkateshwara. The temples’ roots trace back to the 16th century, built
by Virupanna, a Nayak chieftain. The shrine was a very small holy place at that time and
was called as Sri Papaneshwara, which was later remodeled and constructed to develop
into the present shrine, that it is now .
Lepakshi - History
The history of this temple also states that Lord Rama paid visit to this shrine during his
period of exile. Achyuta Raya was the ruler of Vijayanagar at this particular period, who was
the successor of Sri Krishnadevaraya.
There is a tragic story which envelops the shrine. Virupanna had to spend a great deal of
money in building this stark monument, hence the treasury got depleted to a large extent.
The jealous courtiers who knew this informed the King that Virupanna has misused the
state treasury for his ow n personal projects. When Virupanna got wind of this news he
foresaw cruel punishments from the King and hence he plucked out his eyes and crushed it
against the walls of the very monument that he built. Even now it is said that the western
walls of the temple have two red spots to mark this tragic episode.
After this incident, Virupanna would wander around the monument that he built lamenting
that he could no longer admire the magnificence and beauty of the shrine. The temple which
is composed of eight shrines in total is shaped irregularly primarily because of the odd
circumstances of its birth. The temple is resplendent with many sculptures and painting and richly adorned.
