OverView of Neerkunnam
Neerkunnam is a tiny village lying on both sides of NH 47,Vandanam on the north andKakkazhom to the south.ARABIAN sea on west and canal to the East. SIX DECADES ago the sream originating from Thevar nadatemple pond turned a canal from Edathara mukku.Boats used to be mode of transport for people from Pookaitha
river,through Vattappatra a hamlet.Trade flourished with petty small traders selling daily reuirements all packed in small boat.Less money and more of a barter system.prevailed. A masiid,temple and a primary school were the
only public places ,.One of the oldest library and reading rooms in the taluk was in Neekunnam. viz Janasevini Grandhasala.People lived in harmony.Ofcourse poverty too prevailed. Neerkunnam has its prominence in Chemmin famous novel of Thakazhi, Agriculture was the means of livlihood.Fishermen made a living with seaonal catch from sea.,called Chakara.Hindus Muslims and a few Christians lived with mutual trust and brotherhood.
About SDV LPS.The school belonged to Kurups of Madavana,a nair family,The school was surrendered to the
Govt. of Kerala in public interest,retaining its name Sree Devi Vilasam{S D V] ,The adjoining Devi temple also belong to the family.

payattu was imparted,mostly to kurups, which is again a k m east of N H 47.It is said that the spacious kalari was destroyed in a fire and present small temple was constructed by valya veetil family .Eldest male member
