Alappuzha is the district in the Kerala state, India. It was created in August 1957 as Alleppey District and then it was officially renamed as Alappuzha in 1990. The district is a very famous for traveler destination and is also famous for its coir industries. Entire Kerala's coir cottage industry is located in the vicinity of Alappuzha. The district is also famous for its communist ethnicity. It is the birth place for the Punnapra Vayalar strikes against the British raj and also the revolution against feudal raj. Alappuzha is well networked by waterways to many other parts of Kerala, needless to say to well-known tourist destination called Kumarakom.
Alleppey is located to the South of Kochi by about 62 kilometers and to the North of Trivandrum by 155 kilometers. A district with lagoons, backwaters, picturesque canals, and beaches, and, Lord Curzon portrayed it as "Venice of the East". It is the headquarters for administration of Alappuzha District. Malayalam is the wide spoken language and also English and Tamil though in very small numbers.
Alleppey is an vital tourist destination in Kerala. Alleppey backwater is world renowned and has connectivity to Kumarakom and Cochin to the North and Quilon to the South. Alappuzha is also being the only access point for the yearly Nehru Trophy Boat Race, conducted in Punnamada Lake, on the second Saturday of August annually, is the most spectacular and popular boat races. The mullackal chirap is the major attractions of Allapuzha, which is the festive season held ten colorful days every year in the month of December.
Alappuzha History
During 20th century, the Viceroy of the Indian Empire, Lord Curzon paid a visit in the state to Alleppey, now Alappuzha, was very much fascinated and amused by the natural beauty of the place, in joy and amazement, he declared Kuttanad as the rice bowl of Kerala with the infinite stretch of paddy fields, with small streams and canals with lush green coconut palms, was well known even from the early periods of the Sangam age. Alappuzha district has played important role in the freedom struggle of the country. The historic struggles of Punnapra and Vayalar in 1946 constrained the attitude of the people against Sir C. P. Ramaswami Iyer, who was dewan of Travancore, which eventually led to his exit from the political scene of Travancore. A well known ministry was created in Travancore in March 1948 immediately after Indian Independence, and in July 1949, Travancore and Cochin states were combined and it continued until the creation of Kerala state in November 1956 as per the States Reorganization Act 1956. The district came into existence as a separate administrative unit in August 1957.
Alappuzha Culture
Snake boat races are the most famous cultural event in Alleppey. These stunning regattas are generally held between August and October, and it involves thin long boats powered by up to 120 oarsmen.
