Tiruchirapalli is one of the 32 dstricts of Tamil Nadu, located on the banks of River Kaveri. Trichy is the headquarters. During British period, the district was a part of Madras Presidency and renamed from Tiruchinopoly to Tiruchirapalli after 1947. At present, it is the fourth largest Municipal Corporation and urban agglomeration in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the important educational and industrial hubs of Tamil Nadu. There are many industries such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project and Golden Rock Railway Workshops. The National Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Management, Bharathidasan University and Anna University of Technology are also located here. It was renowned for the cigars which were exported to UK during 19th century.
Thiruchirapalli History
The region was primarily ruled by Pallavas. Mahindra Pallava I was the famous king, who ruled from 590 Till 880 AD. After 880 AD, the Cholas came into force and later in 1225 AD; the region was dominated by Hoysulas. It was also ruled by Mughals and the rule was ended by Vjayanagara Empire. The district was ruled by Nayaks of Vijayanagara Empire till 1736 AD. The present day fort and Theppakulam were built by Vishwanatha Nayak. Thiruchirapalli was ruled by Muslims for sometime and later came under British force till independence.
Thiruchirapalli Climate
General climate is dry and hot. From March to July, the temperature is high. From August to October, temperature is average. From November to February, the region experiences heavy rainfalls and thundershowers.
Thiruchirapalli Culture
The residents are called Tiruchiite. The present day district was formed by traditional Chola heartland. It is well known for temples and forts. The culture is similar to Brahminical culture. Trichy has more cosmopolitan outlook due to industrialization and migration. It serves as home for several Carnatic musicians and film actors. Pongal, Tamil New Year, Aadi Perukku, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Navarathri, the Srirangam car festival and Bakrid are grandly celebrated here. New Year, Christmas, Deepavali and Holi are also celebrated with pomp and show.
