South Delhi, which is an administrative district of the National Capital Territory of Delhi in India, is bounded by the Yamuna River to the east, the districts of New Delhi to the north, Faridabad District of Haryana state to the southeast, Gurgaon District of Haryana to the southwest, and South West Delhi to the west. The district is divided into three subdivisions, Defence Colony, Hauz Khas, and Kalkaji for administrative purposes.

The division shown on the map is only for administrative significance. For the common citizen, Delhi is can be broadly divided into five regions, namely North, West, South, East and Central. The usage of the term South Delhi in day-to-day life extends from Delhi's IGI Airport in the South West to the river Yamuna in the South East, a region extending beyond the administrative district South West Delhi.

It is one of the nine districts of NCT of Delhi which was formally established in the year 1997 when Delhi was divided into Nine revenue Districts. Previously, there used to be only one district for whole of Delhi with district head quarter at Tis-Hazari. South District is having its district head quarter at M.B. Road, Saket, and bears a great historical, social, economical & cultural importance. It is bounded by the states of UP and Haryana. Gurgaon & Faridabad districts of Haryana lie to its south and Gautam Budh Nagar district of UP to the south east. South district on its eastern side is bounded by East District of Delhi while on northern & western side lies New Delhi & South West districts respectively.

 Predominantly, the district is urban with a sizeable rural area. A total of 25 villages lie in the district having all the characteristics of rural India. South District is the third largest District of Delhi with an area of 249 Sq. Km, covering 16.7% of the total area of NCT of Delhi. However, some parts of the District represent the crumpled characteristics of the old Arawali hills. Large part of vacant gaon sabha land of district South has been declared as Southern ridge area, meant to be developed as a reserve forest, to influence the local environment and improving the quality of life all over NCR.

Historically, South Delhi was seat of Power from the very beginning as it can be traced by the Tugalkabad fort made by the Tuglaks. The Old fort was constructed by Mughals. The world famous Qutub Minar and the iron pillar, Balban's tomb, Humayun's tomb, Khilji tomb are located in this district. Places of religious impotance include Dargah Hazrat Nizamuddin, Kalkaji temple, Dadabadi Jain temple, Lotus temple of Bahai seat, Chattarpur temple, Hare Rama Hare Krishna temple better known as Iskun temple, Sai Baba temple etc.

An annual Cultural Social event  named "Phool Walon Ki Sair" is organized in the month of October in Mehrauli, which bears great importance as it is a symbol of communal harmony. Various social events are organized at the famous Siri Fort Auditorium, India habitat center and India International center. Apart from the colleges of Delhi University, South Delhi also is the Head Quarter of Indira Gandhi Open University. Jamia Milia Islamia University, Jamia Humdard University and Indian Institiute of Technology, Delhi are also located in this district.
