SOHNA
In the Gurgaon district of the state of Haryana, Sohna is a town and also a municipal committee. It is quite a popular tourist location. An amazing and luxurious Barbet Hut is there in Sohna. A sitting room as well as an attached kitchen is there in the hut. Accommodation facilities in a motel with ac rooms are present for the tourists. For the people who do not want to spend a big amount in lodging, a dormitory with four beds, family huts and camper huts are provided for. In the foothills of the Aravalli Range, Sohna is located.
It is so believed that in the old time period, numerous hermits used to dwell in Sohna. Healing and medicinal features are there in the Shiv Kund, which is the name given to the main kund. Kund stands for tank. During the time of solar and lunar eclipses and also during the time of Somavati Amavasya, the followers come here to take a sacred bath in this holy water. In the year 1586, during the Vikrami Samvat, the construction of the Main Tomb took place.
TOURIST PLACES IN SOHNA
Hot springs: One of the main attractions of Sohna is the hot water springs. Strong traces of sulphur are found in the water of these hot springs. Between 46 degree and 51.7 degree Celsius, the temperature of the water varies. When Arjuna was craving for water, he dug up these wells – as per the mythological stories.
Gangasnan: In November, every year, this place hosts Gangasnan, a fair. In order to celebrate the occasion of “Teej”, another fair is hosted in Sohna during the months of July and August. On the summit of hills, a grandiose park is located. The park is taken care of, by the tourism department of Haryana. Fine accommodation and eating facilities are available here.
Damdama Lake: To enjoy the breathtakingly beautiful terrain and experience boating, one can go to Damdama Lake.
Old Temple of Shiva: The Raja of Bharatpur constructed the age old temple of Shiva. The dwellers of Sohna come here, each year, during the festival of Shiv Chaudas and Shiv Ratri in order to worship the deity of Lord Shiva and Maa Bhagwati so that they will shower blessings on the new born babies and the new weds. The longest existing lineage in Sohna is of the principal priest family. They look after the workings and maintenance of the Shiva Temple. The family is in existence for the last seventeen generations. Baba Sakhamjati Maharaj is the name of the principal tank.
Vintage Car Rally: Sohna hosts a Vintage Car Rally, every year during the month of February. A mela event is held on this occasion by the tourism department of Haryana. The last mela event was held in 2001. It is also believed that Sohna is considered to be a “famous pilgrim place of the Hindus”.
HOW TO REACH SOHNA
By rail: New Delhi has the closest rail station. The distance between the station and Sohna is a mere 49 Kms.
By road: Bus services are available. One can also hire private cabs or cars.
