From the town of Sirsa, the name of the district is derived. From the name Sairishaka, which a Sanskrit name, the name Sirsa originated. In the Mahabharata, the Ashtadhyayi and the Divyavadana, traces of the name Sairishaka can be found. According to the Maahabharata, Nakula takes away Sairishaka, when he conquers the western section. Panini remarked that in the 5th century BC, it was a prosperous and booming city.
Sirsa History
The region covered by the existing day district was made a component of the Delhi Territorys Northern Western District in the year of 1819. The region was captured by the British. Northern and Western Districts were the two sections in which the North Western district was separated in the year of 1820. The region was made a constituent of the Western District. Afterwards, this section came to be known as Haryana. It was again later amalgamated with the newly constructed district of Bhattiana, in the year of 1837, after the separation of it from the district of Haryana. To the Punjab Province, in the year 1858, the district of Bhattiana was relocated. This district was given the name of Sirsa District. Eradication of the district of Sirsa took place in the year 1884. Sirsa tehsil was created by amalgamating the eradicated districts two tehsils, namely Sirsa and Dabwali. The two newly created tehsils became constituents of Punjab Provinces Hissar District. This again was made to be a part of the recently created Haryana State on 1st November, 1966. Diversification of Sirsa Tehsil into Sira and Dabwal tehsils took place in 1968. The combination of Sirsa and Dabwali tehsils of former district of Hissar resulted in the construction of the present Sirsa District on 1st Spetember, 1975.
