Sindhudurg History
The great Maratha warrior King Shivaji built Sindhudurg in 1664. The rocky island location of Kurte was strategically chosen for this fort. This fort was strategically chosen to counter foreign forces and to keep the nearby Siddis of Murud-Janjira in check. It is one of the best preserved forts of the Marathas. Sindhudurg fort has zigzag rampart with 42 bastions. Two thousand khandis of iron was used for erecting the massive iron curtain wall and bastions. Rest all is made of huge stones. The foundation stones were laid down firmly with 5 khandis of molten lead.
The foundation stones were firmly laid down using 4000 mounds of iron. The construction of the fort started on November 25, 1664. It took almost 3 years to complete the fort. It covers an area of 48 acres with a two-mile long rampant. The walls are 30 feet high and 12 feet thick. The high walls protected the people inside from enemy invasion and high tides and waves of the Arabian Sea. The main entrance is made in such a way that it cannot be distinguished from the outside. At a time when Samudra Gaman was banned by scriptures, this construction on an island represents the revolutionary mindset of its builder.
