Shimoga District is one of the 30 districts in the state of Karnataka. A main part of Shimoga District situated in the Malnad region of the Western Ghats, a hilly area well known for its green forests, abundant rainfall, and as the source of many of the area's rivers. Shimoga City is the administration center of the district. One of the famous tourist attraction being jog falls and shimoga is called rice bowl of India. It is situated on the banks of the Tunga River.
Shimoga History
The name of the city is resulted from the term Shiva-Mukha, meaning face of shiva. An substitute mytology is that the name is derived from the term Sihi-Moge, meaning Sweet Pot. The district formed the southern tip of Emperor Ashoka's Mauryan Empire in the 3rd century BC. It was ruled during later centuries by the Kadambas 4th century, Chalukyas 6th century, Gangas, Rashtrakutas 8th century, Hoysalas 11th century, and the Vijayanagara rulers 15th century. The city got an own uniqueness under the Keladi Nayaka rule during the 16th century, reaching its summit under the rule of Shivappa Nayaka. From the late 17th century onwards, the city was a part of the Kingdom of Mysore until the Indias independence in 1947, when Mysore joined into the Republic of India. Government of Karnataka in November 2006, declared the renaming of Shimoga to Shivamogga, along with nine other cities in the state, but the renaming is pending from the Central Government of India.
Shimoga Climate
Shimoga district being a part of the Malnad area, receives good monsoon rainfall; the months from June to October being the rainy season. The average yearly temperature of Shimoga District is around 26 C. The average temperature has increased substantially over the years and the trend can be viewed here in some regions of Shimoga district, the day temperature can in fact ascend to about 40 C during the summer months, leading to water crisis and other problems.
