Shahjahanpur is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It forms part of the Bareilly division. Shahjahanpur is the main town and Powayan, Tilhar, Jalalabad, and Kanth are its Tehsils. Sikhs occupy 20% of the overall population of the district and hence it is also sometimes referred to as mini Punjab. Agriculture is the main occupation of the district. It was established in the year 1813 as per Government notifications. Lakhimpur Kheri, Hardoi, Farrukhabad, Bareilly, Badaun, and Pilibhit are the adjoining districts of the district of Shahjahanpur.
The three main rivers of the district are the Ramganga, the Garrah and the Gomti. The Kathana, the Jhukma the Mensi Rivers flow into the Gomti. The Khannaut, the Suketa and the Kai Rivers feed the Garrah. Wheat, gram, millet and potatoes are the main crops grown. Ordnance Clothing Factory is a mjor clothing factory for defense forces. Shahjahanpur Club is a famous club of the district, whose membership was once regarded as very exclusive.
Shahjahanpur History
Shaheedon Ki Nagri or Shaheed Gadh are the other names of Shahjahanpur. Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqullah Khan, Chandrasekhar Azad, and Rajendra Lahiri robbed the British Treasury near Kakori railway station on August 9, 1925. Forty people were arrested for this conspiracy on December 26, 1925. From Shahjahanpur were Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil, Banarsi Lal, Lala Har Govind, Prem Krishna Khanna, Indu Bhushan Mitra, Thakur Roshan Singh, Ram Dutt Shukla, Madan Lal and Ram Ratna Shukla. Murari Lal Gupta under a fake name of Murari Sharma also participated in this robbery. He went underground and could not be traced out by the police till the end of the case. His son Damodar Swarup Gupta became a famous revolutionary poet with the pen name of "Vidrohi".
