Salem is one of the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. The important towns of Salem are Mettur, Omalur and Attur. The district is well connected to other districts of Tamil Nadu by established road and rail networks. The district headquarters is Salem city and it is well noted for mangoes and Steel. Mettur Dam is the famous tourist destination in Salem which is the major source of drinking water and facilitates irrigation. It is around 340 km from Chennai. The fifth biggest city measures 100 km2. It is also the ffthMunicipal Corporation and Urban agglomeration of Tamil Nadu.

Salem being the part of Kongu Nadu, it located at the base of Yercaud hills. Yercaud is one of the famous tourist attractions and often expressed as Ooty of Poor. Kiliyur Park and Kavery peaks are other popular destinations. The boundaries are Jarugumalai on north, Kanjamalai on west, Godumalai on east and Nagarmalai on north. The region is divided by the River Thirumanimuthar.

Salem History

Salem is one of the ancient district from which Dharmapuri and Namakkal districts were bifurcated. It has the first cinema theater in India, named as Modern Theater and it is also the fourth most urbanized region of Tamil Nadu.
