Raigad is a district in the state of Maharashtra. It is also sometimes called Raigarh. It is located in the Konkan region. The capital of the Maratha leader Shivaji was a fort named Raigad. The district has been named after that. The fort is still present in the interiors of the district in the dense forests. It is located on the west-facing spur of the Western Ghats of Sahyadri range.
The Mumbai Harbour borders the district on the northwest. Thane district touches the district on the north, Pune on the east, Ratnagiri on the south and the Arabian Sea on the west. The natural harbor of Pen-Mandwa is included. It lies immediately south to the Mumbai Harbor. It forms a single landform with it. Raigad History
The northernmost parts of the district were retained in Thane district. In 1883, Panvel, just across the Bay from Mumbai became part of Kolaba. The northeastern corner of Raigad called Karjat came under Kolaba in 1891. Kolaba was subsequently renamed Raigad.
