Pune is a district in the state of Maharashtra. The district headquarters are situated at Pune City. Pune is the eighth largest metropolis in the country. It is also the largest city in the Western Ghats. It used to be the center of power for the Maratha Empire. It is 560 meters above sea level. It is located on the Deccan Plateau at the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers. Pune city is also the administrative headquarters of the district of Pune. Pune has existed as a town since 937 AD. Punawadi was its previous name. As a young boy, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire lived here. The town grew and developed significantly under his reign. Pune became an important political center in 1730. Pune became the center for Indian politics under the rule of Peshwa, the prime minister of the Chhatrapati of Satara. The British took over the place in 1817. It served as a cantonment town and as the "monsoon capital" of the Bombay Presidency until the independence of India.
Pune is known for its educational facilities and relative prosperity. Pune is the cultural capital of Maharashtra. Glass, sugar and forging industries are well present in Pune. Many information technology and automotive companies are setting up factories in Pune district. Various cultural activities like classical music, spirituality, theater, sports, and literature. Migrants from all over India and abroad are attracted by such new opportunities in Pune. Pune is ranked as a Gamma Global City.
Pune History
The district of Pune was not reduced till the month of May 1818 even though it was surrendered on November 17, 1817. Once Pune was captured by the British, they turned their attention to the capture of the de jure seat of Maratha power, namely, Satara, which was taken on 10 February 1818. Satara was captured and Baji Rao fled away to the north. Hence, a proclamation was issued by the Companys Government taking over the territory of the Peshwas. The forts of Sinhgad, Purandar, Chakan, Lohogad, and one or two other forts in the district held out for a couple of months longer. On March 3, 1818, Singhad was captured and on the 16th Purandar was captured. Jivadhan surrendered on May 3, near the nana-pass and rest of the forts eventually passed into the hands of the company. In a month, Baji Rao himself surrendered to Sir John Malcolm in North India. Thus, Poona was completely captured.
Elphistone appointed commissioner and administrative boundaries of the district almost intact. The boundaries of the district have not changes much over the last hundred years. Certain Talukas of the Bhor State have been added to the Poona district though it neither affects the area nor the population of the district. The only practical effect of this merger for the Poona district is that an additional taluka, called Bhor Taluka, and a new Mahal, Vele Mahal, have been included in its jurisdiction.
Pune Culture
Pune is considered by many to be Maharashtra's cultural capital and the form of Marathi spoken in Pune is considered to be the standard form of the language. Both the traditional Maharashtrian lifestyle and modern, progressive outlook are found in the city. The place is hub for educational and liberal thought. People from multiple religions and speaking different regional languages reside here. Various national festival and cultural events are hosted here all the year round.
Pune Climate

Summers begin from early March and last up to July. They are dry and hot. The temperature ranges from 20C to 38C, though at the peak they may reach 40C.
