It is one of the 32 districts of Tamil Nadu. This administrative district was bifurcated from Salem on 25-07-1996 and came into effect from 01-01-1997. It is in second rank in comprehensive Economic Environment index of Tamil Nadu. It has 4 Taluks namely Tiruchengode, Namakkal, Rasipuram and Velur and has Namakkal, Tiruchengode as two revenue divisions. Namakkal district is the major economic source of Tamil Nadu and headquarters is Namakkal city. In Asia,iIt was the first ISO 14001-2004 certified municipality  provision and maintenance of water supply, solid waste and sewage management, town planning, lighting, environmental management and other social services. The popular nick names are Poultry city, Education City and Transport city.

Namakkal History

Hoysalas came into power after the struggle between the Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas. The Hoysals had the power till 14th century and then the region was ruled by Vijayanagara Empire till 1565 AD. In the year of 1623, Madurai Nayakars took over the power. Ramachandra Nayak built the Namakkal fort. The Muslim came into power after1635 AD. Namakkal was ruled byMuslim Sultans of Bijapur and Golkonda, Mysore kings and then the Marattas. In 1750, Hyder Ali ruled this region during with the powerful struggle against British was made by Hyder Ali and by Tipu Sultan later.
