In 1826, it started to be recognized as a separate region. Muzaffarnagar was a part of the First War of Independence which took place in 1857. Shamli was the centre of all the military activities. British came down heavily on the revolters in Shamli and their supporters in Thanabhavan and nearby. A new office of the Congress was opened at Muzaffarnagar in 1899. The freedom struggle continued peacefully. Pt. Sunder Lal, Lala Hardayal, Shri Shanti Narayan and Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan were some of the freedom fighters of the time. A prominent freedom fighter called Haji Ahmad Bakhsh lost his only son while he was imprisoned. He could not attend the burial as he was not allowed to go without the Maafinama. He was given 50 kodas on his back when he refused to give the Maafinama.
