Murshidabad is a district in the state of West Bengal. It is situated on the left side of the River Ganga and hence the soil is very fertile. It is the ninth most populous district in India. The district headquarters are at Baharampur. The Nawabs of Bangla presided from the Murshidabad city. They governed the whole of Bengal from this town alone. The capital was shifted to Calcutta when Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula lost to British in the Battle of Plassey. Malda, Sahebganj, Pakur, Birbhum, Bardhaman, Nadia and Rajshahi border this district from north, northwest, west, southwest, south and east respectively.
Murshidabad History
In 1921, the Murshidabad District Committee of the Indian National Congress was formed. Its first President was Brajbhushan Gupta. The students actively participated in movements against the British like the Boycott of Foreign goods and they were inspired by the revolutionaries. Surya Sen and Niranjan Sen studied at Krishnanath College of Behrampore. Eminent leaders like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Kazi Nazrul Islam were imprisoned here. Other freedom fighters like Gandhiji, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, C.R. Das and Netaji also visited this place. In 1937, Nawab Wasif Ali Mirza formed the Hindu Muslim Unity Association. A conference, on request of Fazlul Haque took place here in 1943. Tridib Choudhury formed another party called the Revolutionary Socialist Party in the year 1940. This district was also affected by the Quit India Movement. At the time of partition, owing to the fact that Muslims were more in number, Murshidabad became a part of Pakistan for two days after which it came under India on account of the final word of Radcliffe.
Murshidabad Climate
Murshidabad, like the rest of the state has a tropical wet and dry climate. The average range of temperature is from 17-30 degrees. Summers are hot and dry with temperature going up to 40 degrees. Winters are mild and short, lasting only for a couple of months. The temperature during winter ranges from 9-17 degrees. May is considered to be the hottest month while January is the coldest. During early summers, dust storms are prevalent. They are followed by thundershowers. Months from June to September are the months of rainfall brought in by the Bay of Bengal. Floods are common which cause loss to life and property.
