The capital of the Pala Empire was situated in Mudgagiri. Before the eastern India was taken over by the East India Company, one of the final wars was fought by Mir Kasim, who was a Bengal Nawab. Three gates were there in the fort constructed by him. The fourth side of the fort contained the river Ganga as a boundary. The whole time during the British Raj, Monghyr was the name by which Munger was acknowledged. A portion of Bhagalpur was composed by Monghyr during the initial stages of British Raj in India. Till 1832, the status of a full district was not given to Munger.
Along the course of time separation of five districts from Munger took place. In 1976 and in 1988, Bengusarai and Khagaria were separated from it respectively. In 1999 Munger witnessed the cutting out of Jamui, Lakhisarai District and Sheikhpura from it. At the present day, the district of Munger is an element in the Red Corridor.
