About Kolkata City

 

Kolkata history is not as old as that of Delhi, Calcutta city of joy was founded in the end of 17^th century and it was made the capital of British India in 1722. It derived it name from the village Kalikata one of three villages captured by British and word Kalikata means land of goddess Kali as there was a temple of Kali Devi. It remained capital of British India until Delhi is declared capital in 1911. Kolkata formerly called Calcutta is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal and is situated on the east bank of Hooghly River. Metropolitan area has population of 15.7 million, making it the third most populous city in India. It is centre of art, culture and science and education in India.

Kolkata has a tropical wet and dry climate. Summers are hot and humid and best time to visit Kotkata is October to March. At this time not only weather is pleasant but also most important festival of Bengal like Durga Puja, dussehar and Diwali are also celebrated during this period

Calcutta is accessible by air since there are a number of domestic airlines that connect Kolkata with other major cities of India like Ahmedabad Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati Mumbai, Port Blair. Jaipur Bhubneshwar etc.

Birla Planetarium

Birla planetarium of Kolkata is one of the largest museums in Asia and located in eastern metropolitan bypass of Calcutta. It is a must see place for people those like astronomy.

Victoria Memorial

It is famous museum of Kolkata and is a fantastic place that will take you into the world of past history where you will see the photos and effigies of prominent personalities who made incredible contribution if the glory of India.

Fort William

Situated on the banks of river Hooghly Fort William is place of attraction in Calcutta. It was named after King William III of England.

Howrah Bridge

Howrah Bridge located over the Hoogli river is said to be busiest bridge of the world. It got its name because it links the city of Howrah to Calcutta. This bridge is the important symbol of Kolkata.

Marble Palace, National Library, Writers Buildings, and Shaheed Minar are other places of attraction and one must visit if one has to fully enjoy the visit.
