Kohima District 

In the Indian state of Nagaland, one of the districts is Kohima. The district of Kohima ranks second in the list of districts of Nagaland having the maximum number of inhabitants; Dimapur ranks first. Kohima is made the administrative headquarters of the district. This district is located in the southern portion of the state. 1444 meters above the sea level is the elevation of this region. It is also the capital city for the state of Nagaland. The Angami Naga tribal group of people dwells here. The district shares its boundaries on the western side with Dimapur, on the northern side with Wokha, on the eastern side with the districts of Zunheboto and Phek and on the southern side with the Indian state of Manipur.

The district of Kohima is considered to be one of the most ancient of the total 11 districts of the Indian state of Nagaland. On 1st December of the year 1963, the status of a separate state was given to Nagaland. At the same time, Kohima was appointed as the capital of Nagaland. From that time onwards, this district has been divided three number of time in order to form the district of Phek in the year of 1973, again to form the district of Dimapur in the year 1998 and for the last time to form the district of Peren in the year 2004. The original name of Kohima was ‘Kewhira’. It is the name of a village, where the town of Kohima is situated. The name ‘Kohima’ came into existence since the British people was unable to utter the original name. ‘Bara Basti’ is another name by which Kohima village is known as.  

The weather condition of the district is quite enjoyable and it is moderate. The climate is not extreme. The winter months are not that chilly and the summer months are also not that heated. The coldest months are the months of December and January. One can also experience some amount of snowfall in the more altitudinous regions. The months from July to August experiences the maximum amount of heat. The temperature remains within 80 degree Fahrenheit and 90 degree Fahrenheit during this time of the summer season. This place witnesses quite a large amount of precipitation during the summer season. 2000 mm is the average yearly precipitation of Kohima.
