Kasaragod is one of the 14 districts for Kerala state. Kasaragod was recognized as a separate district in May 1984. Kasaragod is the northernmost district for the state of Kerala and is named after Kasaragod town which is administration headquarters for the district. Kannur District is on to South, and Dakshina Kannada of Karnataka state on the North, Western Ghats is occupied on the East, with Arabian Sea borders on the West. It is again divided into six administrative segments called development blocks, namely, Manjeshwar, Kasaragod, Kanhangad, and Nileshwar, Parappa, and Karadukka. Kasaragod district also has the highest literacy rate, around 85.17%.
Kasargod district is one of the rare districts in the state of Kerala, which has 7 different languages, with each spoken by huge number of population. The Malayalam is spoken here and it has influences from Beary bashe and also from the languages of Tulu, Kannada, Konkani, Tamil and Urdu.
Kasaragod History
Historically, Kasaragod was also called by Arabs, as Harkwillia. Many Arab travelers visited the Kerala from 9th to 14th centuries, as it was major trade center. The Portuguese traveler, Duarte Borbosa, visited Kumbla, close to Kasaragod in 1514, and rice being exported for coir to Maldives. Dr. Francis Buccanan, who was the family doctor of Arthur Wellesley, visited Kasaragod in 1800. In his travelogue, he recorded information on places like Athiraparambu, Kavvai, Nileshwaram, Bekal, Chandragiri, and Manjeshwaram.
