Karur is a beautifulSouth Indian district of Tamil Nadu, located on the banks of River Amaravathi and Kaveri. Karur city is he headquarters. The district was formed on September 30, 1995 from Tirichirapalli district. It has a long history and praised by several Sangam poets. Because of its strategic location, it was served as battle area for the great Kings Chera, Chola and Pandiya. The country and town side made fertile by the River Kaveri and the modern region is drained by River Amaravathi,Nayyal, Nalkasi and Kudaganar. Karur is a famous for its handloom textile goods and it has very rich cultural heritage.
Karur History
Karur is one of the oldest towns of Tamil Nadu, the history dated backs over 3000 years and it holds the significant role in history of Tamil Nadu. It was a flourishing Sangam towm and sung by several poets. During medieval time the region was ruled by great kings Chera, Chola and Pandiya. Karur was the popular capital of Cheras. The temple of Pasubatheesvarar built by Cholas in 7th century which was sung by Thirugnana Sambandhar. The region was later ruled by Nayakars and Tipu Sultan.During the war against Tipu Sultan in 1783, the Bristish destroyed the Karur fort. One can find the memorial for warriors lost their life in Anglo-Mysore war in Rayanur. After this war, Kaur became a part of Coimbatore and later Thiruchirapalli. Being the part of Kongu Nadu, the history dates backs to 8th century. Kongu literally means the nectar of honey and this ancient region was made up of several taluks and districts presently known as Dharapuram, Palani, Namakkal, Karur, Salem, Erode, Thiruchengodu, Nilgiris, Sathyamangalam,, Coimbatore, Pollachi, Avinashi and Udumalapet.

The highest temperature is from May to June and temperature reached around 37 C to 39 C. Daily average temperature is 24 C. Annual rainfall is 615mm on average. The seasonal rainfall is from east monsoon wind between September and November.

Karur has several sculptured traditional temples of Chera and Chola. The Verappur pilgrimage center is greatly connected to Ponner-Shankar history is in Karur. The festivals famously celebrated here are Pongal, Aadiperukku, Veerapur annul festival and Vaikunta Ekadesi.
