Jalgaon is a district in the state of Maharashtra. It was previously known as East Khandesh district. The state of Madya Pradesh borders it on the north, district Buldhana on the east, Jalna on the southeast, Aurangabad on the south, Nashik on the southwest and Dhule on the west.
Jalgaon district is located on the northern Deccan Plateau. The area under the district is productive, irrigated and agricultural. Jalgaon city is a municipal corporation. Vast industries, educational institutes and good hospitals are present in the modern Jalgaon. Good roads, shopping centres, residential areas and good communication and transport infrastructure mark the development of Jalgaon. Ajanta caves are one of the very attractive tourist places from all over the world and are situated close to Jalgaon. It produces half of the bananas produced by Maharashtra and hence called the Banana City. The 12th President of India, Pratibha Patil was born here.
Jalgaon History
The British captured Khandesh from the Holkar regime in the 18th century and made Dhule its headquarters. Hon. Robert Gill was the first officer of British East India Company in the Khandesh District with headquarters in Dhule. Khandesh was divided into East and West Khandesh in 1906. Present day Jalgaon was East Khandesh. It was included in Bombay state with the reorganization of states in 1956. Jalgaon became a district in the state of Maharashtra when it was formed in 1960.
There is a fort in the Parola tehsils which is believed to belong to the father of Rani of Jhansi. All India Congress Session of 1936 was held at Faizpur in Yawal Tehsil. The legendary poetess Bahinabai Chaudhari of Jalgaon has spread the fame of the Ahirani dialect across the world. Sane Guruji awakened the labour class while Balkavi Thomre's poetry enriched socio-cultural life of the district.
It became a part of Khandesh Subah within the Mughal Empire when it was annexed by Akbar in 1601. The Nizam and the Marathas subsequently ruled over the region. With the formation of Maharashtra state on May 1, 1960, East Khandesh district became a part of the state. It was renamed as Jalgaon district on October 21, 1960.
Jalgaon Culture
Many musical concerts take place in Jalgaon. Artists like Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Zakir Hussain, Jagjit Singh, Vaishali Samant, Abhijeet Sawant, Amit Sana and Swapnil Bandodkar have performed at Jalgaon. An event took place starting from January 28 to 30, 2010. It was called the Khandesh festival. Various competitions were conducted during these three days which show the real Khandeshiness. Stalls of Khandeshi dishes were arranged at Sagar Park. Top Indian music artists like Shreya Ghoshal, Avdhoot gupte and Pankaj udas performed here.
Jalgaon Climate
Diverse climate is experienced in this area. Summers are extremely hot and dry with temperatures going up to 47 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature recording in May 2010 was 49.2 degrees Celsius. Jalgaon receives about 700 mm rainfall during monsoons, which is followed by pleasant temperature in winter.
