Hingoli is a district in the state of Maharashtra. The district headquarters are situated at Hingoli. It forms part of the Aurangabad division. Aundha Nagnath is one of the 12 jyotirlinga shrines and is located in Hingoli.
It is the third least populous district of the state according to the latest census of 2011. Hingoli forms part of the Marathwada on the northern side of Maharashtra. Akola and Yeotmal surround Hingoli from the northern side, Parbhani on the west and Nanded on the south-eastern side.
Hingoli History
The Nizam had control over the Marathwada. Parbhani was a district under the Nizam and Hingoli was a taluka under it. Nizam made it his military base as it shared its boundary with the Vidarbha region. Military troops, hospitals and veterinary hospitals were run from Hingoli. Two big wars took place here. One war took place between Tipu Sultan and Maratha in 1803 and another in the year 1857 between Nagpurkar and Bhosale. The city was an important and famous place in the state of Hyderabad as it was the military base.
Names like Paltan, Risala, Topkhana, Pensionpura and Sardar Bazaar are famous even to this day. Marathwada was made a part of Mumbai in 1956. Hingoli became part of the state of Maharashtra in 1960. Hingoli was part of the district Parbhani. Parbhani was divided on May 1, 1999 and a separate district of Hingoli was formed.
Hingoli Culture
The town is close to the Vidharbha region of Maharashtra. The place held crucial strategic importance during the British rule. The state farm building was the army base for the British. The building is still present. Many people of other states are also found here due to military settlement. These people mainly belong to UP, MP, Rajasthan and Orissa and Andhra Paradesh. Marathi is the major language spoken with the flair of Hingoli. Other languages spoken are Dakkhani Urdy, Hindi and Marwari.
The town is famous for its annual fair festival called Dasara which is a very old festival of town and the second largest fair of India. It has been celebrated for over 155 years.
