Gorakhpur is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The administrative headquarters are situated at Gorakhpur. Gorakhpur is located on the easter side of the state and shares its borders with Nepal. It is also the district headquarters. Gorakhpur is one of the proposed capitals of the Purvanchal state which is yet to be formed. The city of Gorakhpur holds religious significance for many religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism and Sikhism. In fact, many of the saints for the religions considered this place as their home. As they say, the place derives its name from the Sikh saint Gorakshanath. Gorakhnath Temple is still the seat of the Nath sect. Paramhansa Yogananda and Chandragupta Maurya were also born here. The city is also home to many historic Buddhist sites. An 18th century Dargah called the Imambara is present here. Also, the famous Gita Press, a publisher of Hindu religious texts is also here.

Gorakhpur was a place of important activities during the Independence movement. It is today the headquarters of the North Eastern Railways, the erstwhile Bengal Nagpur Railways. It also hosts a new industrial area called GIDA which standa for Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority. Urdu, Hindi and Bhojpuri are the major languages spoken in this region.

Gorakhpur History

Ram Prasad Bismil was born in the city of Uttar Pradesh. He was a great revolutionary and believed in armed struggle against the British rulers. He was hanged to death in Gorakhpur District Jail on December 19, 1927 as he was the main accused in the Kakori incident. His autobiography which he wrote from the cell was banned by the British Government. He wished for the downfall of the British Empire which happened 20 years later. His martyrdom at prime age inspired the people of Gorakhpur particularly and the nation to advance the freedom struggle to its logical end. His cremation took place at Rajghat amongst 1.5 lacs people.
