Gonda History
In this part of the nation, the freedom struggle started on low levels. The leaders were arrested before it could gain any momentum. But the arrests and repressions had the opposite impacts and the movement soon turned into violence. Though the movement had taken a very serious turn in eastern districts of Uttar Pardesh including Baste close vicinity of this district, no serious repercussions occured in Gonda. The Movement of 1942 lost its pace here and was soon forgotten after 1944.
In 1946 Congress leaders were released and in the general elections for the provincial legislature the congress was again returned in majority. India finally attained Independence on August 15, 1947. Hordes of people gathered in the district headquarters to witness the flag hoisting. The Indian Tricolor was hoisted on the Collectorate office and other Government, semi-government and non-government buildings. People rejoiced the event with a lot of enthusiasm and zeal.
