Gandhinagar History
The ruler of Shertha town in the 13th century was king Pethasinh of Pethappur. The Sultanate of Patan used this land as a battle ground after the death of Pethasinh. Ahmedabad was made the capital of Gujarat. A new capital city was decided to build on the land, which was once a part of Pethapur.
The citys infrastructure was completed in 1970. Until 1980, Gandhinagar, was known as Gandhian City, as it was based on Gandhis concepts and principles. It was also known as Unpolluted city between 190 and 1090, when there was a low pollution there. Then city became the Green City after 1990, when many trees were planted. In 2002, Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat, proposed a new triple focus for the city. It was that the city should be green. It should utilize solar energy and it should be cosmopolitan.
