Etawah is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district headquarters are situated at Etawah Town. The district forms part of the Kanpur division. The city of Etawah is located along the River Yamuna. It is also the administrative headquarters of the district. The city played a major role in the Revolt of 1857. It also has the confluence of Yamuna and Chambal Rivers. It is also the site of the remains of the Great Hedge of India.

Etawah History

The people of the district supported the Quit India Movement of 1942 with a lot of enthusiasm. Strikes, protests and processions were observed in every nook and corner of the district. The rules made by the British were disobeyed with on a mass scale. Also, the flag of Congress hoisted on all the Congress offices and on numerous private buildings. There were mass arrests, imposition of collective fines, and lathi charges. Six people were killed in a police open fire on August 12, 1942. There was widespread hatred against the British and it also made it clear to the British that their rule was about to end. By 1945, when the Second World War ended, British public opinion had veered round to granting complete independence to India. The British Parliament by passing the Indian Independence Act, 1947 decided to quit India for good. India finally achieved freedom on August 15, 1947. Etawah celebrated the event with befitting glee and rejoicing in every home. The Indian Tricolor was hoisted on every important building.
