East Siang, which is an administrative district in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India, is the gateway to the state of Arunachal Pradesh. It is a wild mountainous area presenting a remarkable topographical variety. It derives its name from the Mighty River Siang that, originating from Tibet, where it is called Tsangpo, transcends down and flows through the entire length of the area until it descends down into the plains of Asam south of Pasighat town, where it meets Dihang and Lohit and becomes the Brahmaputra. Languages spoken in the district include Adi, a Sino-Tibetan tongue with approximately 1,40,000 speakers, written in both the Tibetan and Latin scripts, and Galo, an endangered language with 30,000 speakers, also in the Sino-Tibetan language family.
East Siang History
In the year 1989, the territory was transferred from West Siang district to East Siang. A decade later, in the year 1999, the district was bifurcated to make Upper Siang district.
