Uttarakhand is a state located in the northern part of India. Dehradun Distrcit is a district in the state of Uttarakhand. Dehradun is the administrative headquarters of the district. The state of Uttaranchal was established in the year 2000. Since then Dehradun functioned as the capital of the state. 6 tehsils, 6 community development blocks, 7 towns and 764 occupied villages and 18 uninhabited villages are the elements of Dehradun District. This district holds the second position in the list of most inhabited district of Uttarakhand in the year 2011; Haridwar being the first.
The distance between the capital city of India, Delhi and Dehradun is 230 km. The district of Dehradun is lush in natural beauty. The town is a host to numerous renowned educational establishments like Oil and Natural Gas Commission, Survey of India, Indian Institute of Petroleum, Forest Research Institute, Rashtriya Indian Military College, Indian Military Academy and some more. A well known holiday spot, Dehradun is famous for its Basmati rice, tea and litchi orchards, which adds to the attractiveness of the city.
Due to the Gurkha War of 1814-1816, this region became a battle wreck. Thus it was taken away from Maharaja of Tehri-Garhwal by the British. It was made to come under the administration of Saharanpur District, which lay to immediate south of this region. By then the district of Saharanpur was under the British Rule. Important towns such as Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Landour and Chakrata are there in Dehradun District. From Ganges River in the east to the Yamuna River in the west, and from the Terai and Shivaliks in the south and southeast to the Great Himalaya in the northwest the district of Dehradun covers a vast expanse of area.
Dehradun History According to Skanda Purana, a section of the region named Kear Khand was composed of Dun. When the 3rd century BC was coming to an end, it was incorporated by Ashoka into his empire. Apart from some distruptons from the Rohillas, this expanse of area was part of the Garhwal Empire for ages according to what history reveals in front of us. It was under the reign of Gorkhas for almost two decades till 1815, after which the British took control of the Garhwal region and the Gorkhas were driven out of this place. An addition of an area, which is the present tehsil of Dehradun was made to Saharanpur in the same year. Then again it was relocated to the Kumaon Division in 1825. A different Deputy Commissioner was given the responsibility of Dehradun and Jaunsar Bhabar in 1828. However in 1829, relocation of the district of Dehradun was done to Meerut Division from the Kumaon Division. An officer subordinate to the Collector of the district was given the charge of Dun, upon its addition to the Saharan District in 1842; however it is governed as a distinct district since the year of 1871. In 1968, the district was incorporated into the Garhwal Division after its exclusion from Meerut Division.

Time and agian, a summer temperature of 35 degree Celsius can be observed here. The winter temperature ranges from 2 to 20 degree Celsius. The district receives severe and prolonged rainfall during the season of monsoon.
