Davanagere District also called as Devangere District, is the district of administration of southern state Karnataka, India.  Davanagere city is the district headquarters.  The district is located above the historic Chitradurga.  The prominent places in this district are Harihara, Honnali, and Channagiri and closeby districts are Shivamogga, Haveri, and Chitradurga.  The Davanagere district has 6 taluk panchayats, 24 hoblies, 230 grama panchayats, 803 villages, 1334 habitations, and 2 city municipal councils. Davanagere is located on the NH4 and it is around 265 km from Bangalore, the state capital.  Davangere was recognized as a separate district in 1997 when they were split from then the united district of Chitradurga for administrative conveniences.  Major language spoken here in Davangere is pure Kannada with very less influence of other languages and hindi is also spoken commonly.

Davangere History

Davanagere was initially an murky village, forming one of the suburbs of Bettur.   Sultan Haider Ali presented it as jagir to a Maratha chief named Apoji Ram who encouraged traders to settle here.  After his death without heirs, the place continued to grow, being favored by Tippu Sultan.  European firm exploited the situation and started a cotton mill, which led to a boom of cotton mills in Davanagere after the fall of Tipu Sultan's regime.  Cotton was grown in abundance as the soil of Davanagere and nearby Harihar was most situable for the same.  Davanagere had a municipality around 1870.

Davangere Climate

Davangere district has an healthy climate.  Southern parts of the district has a more pleasing weather.  Summer usually starts during February and ends until May.  It is a very harsh weather with winds, high temperatures, and rare thunderstorns with showers.  Rainy season sets in from June and may lasts up to September with post monsoon sets the following months, October and November.  After this, one can witness rise in day temperatures with considerable rainfall as well.  Winter season sets in the period from December to mid February. Davangere and Harihar have hot summer, pleasant winter and average rainfall.  Harapanhalli and Jagalur blocks have very hot summer, very low rainfall, and a pleasant winter.
