Dausa is a district of Rajasthan, which is a state in the western part of India. The district headquarters is located in the city of Dausa. It shares its border with Alwar District on the north, with Bharatpur District on the northeast, with Karauli District on the southeast, with Sawai Madhopur District on the south, and with Jaipur District on the west. Baswa, Dausa, Lalsot, Mahwa and Sikrai are the five tehsils of the district. Rivers Sawa and Ban Ganga flows through the district. The district is located on the National Highway number 11. The highway runs from Jaipur to Agra. It is located at a distance of 100 km to the east of Jaipur. Kherla Bujurg is a Gram Panchayat in Tehsil Mahwa. This place is well-known because of a particular performance. The record was made during an election of member for legislative assembly Mahwa seat for Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha. All of the three candidates from the National parties resided in this village. Three of them belonged to the same cast, as well as all three of them were advocated by their profession.
Dausa derived its name from Devgiri, which is a hill closeby. A fort is located on the top of hill. The fort was constructed by the Badgujar Kings, who were the initial rulers of this area. Later on the Chauhans gave Dausa to Kachwahas. However the heart of their power was relocated to Amber. Akbar stayed in Dausa when he went to Ajmer as a pilgrim to Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti. There, he met with Rupsi Baragi, Hakim of Dausa at that time and also the brother of Bharmal. The main occupation of the people of Dausa is agriculture. Wheat, bajra, rapeseed, mustard and groundnuts are the main crops of the district.
Dausa History
On April 1991 the Dausa District was constituted. It was created by separating four tehsils which are Dausa, Baswa, Sikrai and Lalsot of Jaipur district. On 15 August 1992, the Mahwa Tehsil of Sawai Madhopur was added in the district. Many prominent freedom fighters came from this district. Amongst the freedom fighters who gave their valuable contribution for fight for independence and for amalgamation of the Princely States to form Rajasthan State, Late Shri Tikaram and Late Shri Ram Karan Joshi were two of them. After independence, the First elected Chief Minister of Rajasthan was Late Shri Tikaram Paliwal in 1952. Also the First Panchayati Raj Minister of Rajasthan was Late Shri Ram Karan Joshi. He submitted the First Panchayati Raj Bill in the Vidhansabha in 1952.
Sant Sunderdas was born on Chaitra Shukla Navami in Vikram Samvat 1653 in Dausa. He was the famous poet of traditional worship by poetry. He was also a Nirgun Panthi Sant. Out of the 42 Granths written by hum, Gyan Sundaram and Sunder Vilas are famous.
Dausa Culture
A unique singing style of this region is the folk art of Hea-Khayal. Its uniqueness lies in its traditional singin. It is highly stylized. However at present it has been skillfully employed to comment on the current socio-economic-political scenario in a satirical manner. Hela singers are extremely popular among the village folk of Dausa. They demonstrate the undying spirit and zest for life of its people.
