Darbhanga district, with Darbhanga town as its administrative headquarters, is one of the thirty-eight districts of the state of Bihar state in the eastern  part of India. It shares boundaries with Madhubani district on the north, Samastipur district on the south, Saharsa on the east district and Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur districts o the west.

It is divided into four natural divisions. The first division comprises of the eastern portion consisting of Ghanshyampur, Biraul and Kusheshwarsthan blocks. It contains fresh silt deposited by the Kosi River. The second division comprises of the regions lying south of the Boorhi Gandak river. It is the most fertile area in the district. The third division is the region of doab between the Burhi Gandak and Baghmati rivers and consists of the low-lying areas covered by chaur and marshes. The fourth division consists of the Sadar sub-division of the district. This zone is watered by a number of rivers and consists of a few up-lands.

Madhubani and Samastipur divisions were carved out from Darbhanga district in the year 1976.

 Darbhanga Climate

The weather is cold in the moths from November to February. The month of March is also partially cool. The temperature rises remarkably as a consequence of westerly winds in the second half of March. The temperature raises upto107 degree in the month of May. It is the hottest month. It starts raining towards the middle of June with the rise of humidity and the fall in temperature. This weather continue up to August .The rainy season continues till the middle of the month of October. Average rainfall experienced is 1142.3 mm. It receives an average rainfall of 92% in monsoons.

Important fairs and melas organised in various parts of the district include Karthik Purima mela, Dussehra mela, Janmastami mela and Diwali mela.
