The state of West Bengal has another district named Cooch Behar. The Koch Dynasty, during the British ruled over the area and Koch Bihar was their seat. According to the latest census, it is the third least populous district in the state. Situated on the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, Cooch Behar is the most famous city in the district of Cooch Behar. Also it is the district headquarters. Being declared a heritage town, it is also a very well panned city with remnants of royal heritage. The Cooch Behar Palace and the Madan Mohan Bari Temple make Cooch Behar one of the most sought out tourist destinations in West Bengal. It is also the hometown of Maharani Gayatri Devi.
Cooch Behar History
The Mahishya community gave birth to the Koch dynasty who ruled the Cooch Behar area since the 16th century. Though the invasions of the nearby provinces could not affect this town, the invasion from Bhutan gave it into the hands of the British under an alliance. After 1947, it merged with the nation as a whole. Cooch Behar has transformed from a Princely state to a modern town. It was ruled by a feudatory ruler under the British Government, also the king of Cooch Behar, until August 28, 1949. After that, the king gave up authority of the province and handed it over the Indian Government. The actual transference came into force on September 12, 1949. On January 19, 1950, Cooch Behar became a part of the state of West Bengal.
Cooch Behar Climate
The area has a moderate type of climate with the absence of extreme temperatures. Summer lasts from April to May with April being the hottest month of the year. Winters last from November to February. The climate is overall moderate with monsoons lasting from June to September. Relative humidity ranges from 50-70% during February to May which is comparatively lesser than the other months.
